Food to Help You Combat Depression and Stress

Food to Help You Combat Depression and Stress

Believe it or not there are such things as a diet for depression. Because like the age old saying goes ‘you are what you eat’ so the food you consume has a major impact on your physical and mental well-being. It is due to this reason that you should be conscious of what you are eating and where your food is coming from, especially meat. So what sort of foods help to combat stress and depression? Here is a short list:

Get Them Leafy Greens

I myself am not the biggest fan of green leaves being part of my diet, but I eat it because I know it is essential to my overall health and wellbeing.  Leafy greens pack a huge amount of nutrients that you will not find anywhere else.  It has the ability to majorly boost your immune system, stop all sorts of inflammation and even fight cancer.  And because brain inflammation has been known to result from depression, eating leafy greens should help fight it.

Avocado Power

Avocados are my absolute favourite fruit. It can be eaten so many ways and tastes amazing. Avocado is filled to the brim with healthy fats and vitamins that are necessary for your body. It contains some much needed oleic acid that is meant to help your brain function more smoothly.

Berries Are Best

If you know anything about PTSD and nutrition then you will know that berries are packed full of life-giving antioxidants that help lower the levels of depression in an individual. Anti-oxidants are your body’s very own medical team. When a few cells in your body get damaged the antioxidants rush in to repair the damage and get them functioning normally or at their optimum capacity. They also protect your cells from cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. It helps that fresh berries are delightful to eat.

Nuts and Seeds

Walnuts specifically are an absolute treasure. Walnuts are richly dense with omega-3 fatty acids that support brain function and thus help to reduce symptoms of depression. Whether you are depressed or not there is so much to gain from eating walnuts (and other nuts too), they are after all a delicious treat. Seeds too are full of omega-3 acids that are essential for your body. Seeds help fight diseases and also helps to increase your body’s ability to absorb the nutrients from vegetables you eat. The best part about seeds is that you can always carry a small bag full of them wherever you are and you can munch on them whenever the hunger might strike you.

Fatty Fish

Eating fish is another great way to get those Omega-3 fatty acids into your diet, especially if you are not much into fruits. The fatty acid is rich with very specific brain-boosting properties that can help combat depression. Not to mention that it is good for your overall health as well.

These are a few of the foods you can eat and should eat if you are feeling emotionally unbalanced. Never underestimate the power of food on your lifestyle. Eat healthy and live healthy.
